Dear Sadie: The German shepherd who captured my heart recently said Arf Wiedersehen. Why, Sadie, why?
- Confused in Carlsbad, CA

Dear Confused: Two legs, or four? Mazel tov.

Dear Sadie: I’ve loved a man for many years, but am too shy to tell him. What can I do?
- Red-Faced in Rhode Island

Dear Red: Bake him some Blushing Meringues and place this column under his nose. If he fails to get the message, give up and eat them yourself. Mazel tov.

Blushing Meringues:

6 egg whites, at room temperature
2 tsp. white vanilla
½ tsp. cream of tartar
6 drops red food gel
2 c. granulated sugar

Preheat oven to 275 deg. F. Beat egg whites on medium speed until frothy. Add vanilla, cream of tartar, and food gel. Begin beating at high speed, adding sugar a few tablespoons at a time, until no grainy feeling remains when mixture is rubbed between thumb and forefinger and mixture stands in stiff peaks. Pipe or spoon onto parchment-lined baking sheet. Bake 1 hr. Turn off heat and leave in oven to dry at least 2 hr. without opening oven door.

These meringues are as good as
an aphrodisiac. Mazel tov!
