Martha’s Peppermint Hot Chocolate

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! This Yuletide recipe originates with the December, 2006 edition of Martha Stewart’s Everyday Food. I’ve made a couple of minor
Mmmm-mmmm!
changes, but the basic recipe is hers. As an optional addition, you may want to try
¼ oz. (30 g) peppermint schnapps in each mug.

Martha’s Peppermint Hot Chocolate:

⅓ c. (80 mL) unsweetened cocoa powder
4 c. (1 L) whole milk
½ c. (125 L) semi-sweet chocolate chips
7 peppermint sticks (3 crushed to make ¼ c. (60 mL); 4 left whole)
Dash salt

Place cocoa in a medium saucepan. Gradually whisk in milk until cocoa has dissolved. Add chocolate chips and crushed peppermint; simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until chocolate and peppermint melt, 8 to 10 minutes. Bring to boil and immediately remove from heat. Add dash salt and ladle into mugs, topping each with peppermint stir stick. Serves 4.

Use the flat end of a meat mallet ...

… to break up a small candy cane to garnish this drink.
